This is the official statement published today on the Internet page of the Prelature:

"We were surprised to receive the news that the bishop of Barbastro-Monzón has unilaterally decided to appoint a rector of the Torreciudad Sanctuary. The Opus Dei prelature believes it is not the bishop's responsibility to make this appointment as it is a temple of the Prelature.

According to canon law, the temple - which was built in the 70s with donations promoted by Opus Dei faithful, cooperators, and many other people from Aragon and around the world - has the legal status of an oratory of the Prelature, and was established, like all Opus Dei center oratories, with the blessing of the Most Reverend Bishop of the diocese.

The temple is owned by the canonical Foundation Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles de Torreciudad.

According to the current statutes of Torreciudad, from 1980, the appointment of the rector and the designation of the priests who take care of the pastoral care corresponds to the Regional Vicar of the Prelature. This has been the procedure since 1975.

Over a year ago, the Prelature approached the bishop of the diocese, in order to start joint work - which has not been completed - to prepare new statutes, with the aim of establishing Torreciudad as a diocesan sanctuary and establishing a pastoral care agreement with the diocese, similar to the agreements that the Opus Dei prelature maintains for the pastoral care of numerous parishes and churches in Spain and in other countries.

This joint work, although developed in a climate of mutual collaboration, has not been without difficulties of understanding and interpretation on the part of the diocese.

The Opus Dei prelature will study this matter carefully and in a spirit of ecclesial communion. Our wish is to continue collaborating with the Diocese in the evangelizing work that is carried out from Torreciudad, a place so dear to the people of Alto Aragón, and where every year thousands of people have an encounter with the Virgin, go to the sacrament of confession, and come closer to Jesus inspired by the life and teachings of Josemaría Escrivá from Barbastro."
