Another outcome of the unfortunate motu proprio signed by Pope Francis and written by the proverbial hater of Opus Dei, now Cardinal Giancarlo Ghirlanda. Here's the news: the bishop of Barbastro Monzón (2014 - ), Ángel Pérez Pueyo, has just appointed the rector of Torreciudad, a sanctuary owned by a non-ecclesiastical but civil Board of Trustees, which is, as we know, in his Diocese. It is known that his curia hosts those who have a known animosity towards Opus Dei.

Happy reading.

IN THIS ENTRY: MARIAN DAY OF THE FAMILY ECLIPSED BY INVITED BISHOP

NEW ATTACK ON OPUS DEI. TORRECIUDAD’S MARIAN FAMILY DAY ECLIPSED BY INVITED BISHOP

Bergoglio's dispossessions has already began. the bishop from the Diocese of Barbastro-Monzón in Spain is trying ot exert his power over a Sanctuary that belongs to a lay institution: Torreciudad. Another consequence of the pitiful motu proprio signed by Pope Francis and drafted by the recognized detractor of Opus Dei, now Cardinal Giancarlo Ghirlanda. The news is as follows: the bishop of Barbastro Monzón, Ángel Pérez Pueyo, has appointed the rector of Torreciudad, a sanctuary owned by a civil, not ecclesiastical, board of trustees, which is located, as we know, in his diocese. However, by the statutes of the sanctuary, the rector is always appointed by the prelate of Opus Dei, since the inauguration of Torreciudad in July 1975.

It is well known that the curia of the Bishop of Barbastro-Monzón harbors many who hold a known animosity towards Opus Dei. This he has carried out "until the canonical situation between both institutions is clarified", as declared by the bishop, a very particular situation that arises from the lamentable document "Ad Charisma Tuendum".

Perhaps he got carried away because the real rector, Ángel Lasheras, invited him to preside over the 31st Marian Family Days, in Torreciudad, on September 16, 2023. He was also extended an invitation to preach the homily at the thanksgiving mass for the life of the saint founder of Opus Dei in the church of San Josemaría of Barbastro on June 26, 2023.

In that mass the bishop highlighted the "Ad Charisma Tuendum" “alerting” the faithful of Opus Dei and other parishioners present about the dangers involved in wanting to belong to the hierarchy of the church instead of just being a group of associated faithful attending mass together.

The bishop will stumble and fall on his backside when the civil authorities put a stop to his runaway horses and explain that he cannot burst in like a bull in a china shop in an institution that does not belong to him. Or so we hope. Because Bergoglio is the Church, and he is the law, and if not, he invents it to his liking. Amen.

We know that the charisma of Opus Dei stands out as a main part of its essence that members of Opus Dei do not associate, to fulfill their mission. Opus Dei simply provides incorporated members the means to achieve their ends, which is the desire born from the particular vocation of a search for holiness amid the ordinary obligations of the Christian, sanctifying work, sanctifying oneself in work and sanctifying others in that context. Saint Josemaria Escrivá explained it with the simile of being contemplatives in the midst of the world, to distinguish them from the religious state of "set apart from the world”.

Even so, the basis of the spirit of Opus Dei is not that search for holiness. The foundation of the spirit of Opus, in the words of its Founder, is the sense of divine filiation, the feeling of being a child of God.

Francisco confuses personal prelature with association of the faithful. A slip that reveals what they ask of him: the extinction of the prelature and its works. The confusion, or slip of Francisco, in one of his last interviews (this paragraph we extract from the 2nd Edition of the book "Operation Opus Dei" by our collaborator Jordi Picazo in Spain, published on July 15, 2023) is reflected in his own words:

"These are the words that the Pope gives as an answer to the journalist's question on a page of the «Profile» portal [the hyperlink and the bold is mine]:

"JORGE FONTEVECCHIA —While Pope John Paul II brought Opus Dei to be a personal prelature in 1982, you, through the document "Ad charisma tuendum" took away from them power and independence last August :has anything changed in these last 40 years that justifies it?

JORGE BERGOGLIO —It was not about subtracting power, there was an imbalance here. In canonical law, Opus Dei was among the clerics, that is, it depended on the congregation of the clergy and in the Apostolic Constitution it depended on the congregation of the bishops. So, what I did was put it in its place and nothing more, that's not subtracting power. It remains an association of the faithful that, like any association of the faithful, depends on the Dicastery for the Clergy. But Opus Dei has wonderful things about its work, and it has defects like any neighbor's son, which are local, not universal.

"This interview can be read in different chapters offered by the same news portal on the Internet, "Perfil".

"Pope Francis demonstrates a serious misunderstanding of the charisma of Opus Dei. The institution of Opus Dei had been, in its legal path, an association of the faithful, a Pious Union, in the beginning, and a Secular Institute. However, that figure did not align with the lay character of the organization and was only appropriate at that particular moment in the legal development of the Work to reach the figure of the Personal Prelature. By embracing the new figure of Secular Institute that the Apostolic Constitution Provida Mater Ecclesia made possible, Saint Josemaría Escrivá wanted to ensure that the secular character of anyone who was a member of a Secular Institute was clear. He followed the path to normalize the life of the faithful of Opus Dei, which was no more than that of the first Christians.

"In the face of this serious lack of understanding by the Pope about the reality of Opus Dei, the necessary conclusion is that the reform that Pope Francis asks of Opus Dei «to strengthen its charisma» can only come from those who, knowing this charisma, are declared enemies of the figure of personal prelatures, especially the Jesuit and friend of Francis, Cardinal Ghirlanda — recently awarded the cardinalate.

"Will certain canons of the CDC (Code of Canon Law) erase the personality of Opus Dei? It seems that certain precepts of the Code of Canon Law could dilute the original identity of Opus Dei. Everything indicates that the Work is being pushed to assume the legal form of a Private Association of the Faithful, and here we explain some of the possible changes:

"Some canons of the CDC that would blur the identity of Opus Dei

324 § 1. A private association of the faithful freely appoints its president and officers, according to the statutes.

§ 2. If a private association of the faithful desires a spiritual counselor, it can freely choose him among the priests who legitimately exercise the ministry in the diocese; however, this needs confirmation from the Ordinary of the place.

325 § 1. Private associations of the faithful freely manage the goods they own according to the provisions of the statutes, while preserving the right of the competent ecclesiastical authority to monitor them so that the goods are used for the purposes of the association.

§ 2. According to the rule of c. 1301, it is under the authority of the Ordinary of the place regarding the administration and expenditure of the goods that they have received by donation or legacy for pious causes.

326 § 1. The private association of the faithful is extinguished according to the rule of the statutes; it can also be suppressed by the competent authority if its activity seriously harms the doctrine or ecclesiastical discipline, or causes scandal to the faithful.

§ 2. The fate of the goods of an association that has been extinguished must be determined according to the rule of the statutes, with acquired rights and the will of donors being respected."

To be continued.
